Easy Waist Apron

I have been busy this weekend sewing two aprons for a soon to be wed work colleague and it took most of my weekend crafting time. I decided to make matching aprons for the bride and groom, but needed to come up with a Male version. I had previously made the Female version from pattern, but the Male version was a "Cut and Sew As You Go" kind of project. Sometimes these work out and sometimes they do not. Well I started with Heather Bailey's Nicey Janet Slim Dandy in Pink which coordinates with the Hello Rose in Cream that I purchased for the female version.
How was I going to make this Waist Apron?I figured it would have to be 1/2 the size of a regular apron, so here are the pattern pieces I used.

Main Fabric - Stripe
 1 pc 25" x 18"- for the Body
 1 pc 16" x 8"- for the pocket
Contrasting Fabric - Green
 1 pc 16" x 3" -  for Trim on Pocket
 1 pc 25" x 3" -  for Trim on bottom
 2 pc 3" x 28" -  for Apron Ties
Lining - Cream Cotton
 1 pc 25" x 20"

Now there are not any photos of these steps since I was winging it and wasn't sure if it will be worth the effort, but it is pretty easy to follow. (seam allowance 1/4")
  1. Take the  25" x 18" pc  and sew the 25" x 3" pc to the bottom. This will be the bottom trim of your apron.
  2. Take this new piece and fold the top over and press 1/4" and then again 1" and Press. Topstitch along the top and bottom of the fold. This is the waist band.
  3. Next take the pocket fabric (16"x 8") and sew the trim fabric (16" x3") to each other right sides together. Now Fold over the top (trim) 1/4" and then another 1/4" and topstitch. This is the pocket with trim.
  4. To make the ties, take the 1 piece and fold 1/4" and press on each side and one end. Then fold in half and press and topstitch all the way around on both sides. Repeat for the other piece and you now have two ties
  5. On the pocket, press 1/4" and three sides. Position it about 7" from the top and in the center of the apron body (about 4" from sides). Topstitch on three sides. Then find the center of your new large pocket and topstitch down the center. Now you have to large pockets.
  6. Last take you apron body and lay out on your lining. Trace on to lining and then cut.
  7. Position the ties in the center of the waist band, pin and then pin lining right sides together.
  8. Sew lining to back. Leave 2" opening to turn.
  9. Turn apron to right sides out, press
  10. Sew opening and you done
It was that easy and here is the result:

I think turned out wonderful and I love the big large pocket, big enough for grill tools. I might have to make another one for myself. Here I am modeling it!(sorry for this photo, but it's hard to take a one of yourself and sorry about the wrinkles too!)
Here is a better photo of the not so wrinkled and you can see the detail on bottom!

I think I should have made the ties longer so they can wrap around the front and tie better. But not at bad for a first attempt without a pattern! Here is it's companion in Nicey Jane Hello Rose in Cream.

These are super fun and easy to make and I altered this pattern slightly with ribbon on the trim of the pockets and bottom trim. Hopefully both Bride and Groom will enjoy their matching Aprons that were so easy to make!

Ipad Pillow Stand

I like to watch tutorials on my Ipad and although I have a cover that converts to a stand, it isn't always the best solution for viewing. So I decided to make one of my own inspired by these Iphone stands I found on Etsy. They are sold by dognamedbanjo  and are really unique and lovely. So I thought I could make one similar to it and here is how i did it. First I started with a 1 yard of a fabric in my two favorite colors. Then I cut the following pieces 1 Pc 13" x 13" 1 pc 29 x 13" 2 Triangle pieces 13" x 13" x 13" Next I sewed the top square to the two triangles. This is will be the sides and the base. Next I took the large rectangular piece and sewed it to the bottom of the square. Now I don't have photos of the last few steps since once it start forming a pillow it is difficult to photograph, but the process is not that difficult. Next I sewed each side of the the rectangle to one side of the triangle on both s

Neck Tie Upcycled to Cuff

I found a large stash of Neck ties at an Estate Sale this past weekend and I had to buy them since I had the perfect idea for an upcycle project. They were mostly from a long since closed store here in Buffalo,NY and I felt the need to preserve them as well as the tags. I started by washing them on gentle and removing them immediately and laying flat to dry. They came out a little disfigured but nothing that a little ironing wouldn't fix. Next I took a seam ripper and opened up the back to take out the interfacing. I did this for two reasons, it was discolored and had a little odor and it would be easier to sew without this bulk.  I next cut the tie into a piece 10" long and hemmed the edge. Then I sewed two pieces of velcro to each side to make my cuff. The last step was to sew on a few antique buttons and beads and my cuff was done. Wow! Looking at this I can't believe how it turned out!.But wait... I made a few more! Love this one.. Antique Maple leave button and golden

The Oscars

The Oscars are upon us. Happening tonight. I usually watch the Red Carpet to see what everyone is wearing, but it often makes me think about at one time I wanted to be a costume designer.  I have always liked making things and thought it would be easy. I have made several Halloween costumes over the years. Pretty simple and very classy. I could design costumes for movies, right.. This classic would surely win me many Oscars. I am sure I would get many votes for this interpretation of a Court Jester. Of course these are from about 25 years ago, when life was much simpler.. Now I don' think I would be able to complete with other designers.. Oh well I better find something else that I am better at.. Enjoy, Janet
